CVUSD expanding after-school, hands-on programs for new school year

The first day of classes for the Coachella Valley Unified School District is close and they’re pushing to provide different educational opportunities for students.

A new year means new opportunities for students at CVUSD. After-school and hands-on programs are being expanded district wide to enhance learning.

“We have the best students in the world so we want to be able to offer them great opportunities for their future,” Assistant Superintendent CVUSD, Maria Gandera, said.

Programs include music, sports, and the performing arts. It will be introduced at elementary schools and is meant to engage students and stimulate a love of learning they wouldn’t otherwise get sitting in a classroom.

“The fun things they usually get excited about. The science, the music, the arts and so forth,” Gandera said.

The district is also looking to strengthen relationships with outside groups focusing on technical education, providing hands on training for potential careers. One parent says she loves the initiative as her son is looking for a career in law enforcement.

“That will be really really great. Like I’m telling you, it’s a great opportunity now that the district is doing more about the kids,” Iliana Higuera said.

One teacher at Caesar Chavez Elementary School says he’s looking forward to the district’s new push for more programs. He believes it provides a positive impact for kids.

“When they gave us that opportunity to do it after school, the students really looked forward to it and it really helps them develop mentally,” Pedro Ruiz said.

The first day of school for the district is Thursday.
