CVUSD gears up for first day of school
Thursday is the first day of school for students in the Coachella Valley Unified School District. CVUSD enrolls over 18,000 students district-wide with nearly half of them being English language learners.
The district currently has 14 elementary schools, 3 middle schools and 3 high schools, plus one continuation high school and one special school for teenage mothers. It covers an expansive area including the city of Coachella, a portion of Indio, Thermal, Mecca, and Salton City in Imperial County.
The district this year is pushing to provide different educational opportunities for students. After-school and hands-on programs are being expanded district wide to enhance learning. It include music, sports, and the performing arts. It’s meant to engage students and stimulate a love of learning they wouldn’t otherwise get sitting in a classroom. The programs will now be introduced at all elementary schools.
The district is also looking to provide more opportunities in it’s career-oriented academies, providing hands-on training for possible careers after graduation.
