Landspout tornado confirmed in Anza

The National Weather Service in San Diego confirmed the severe weather event observed in Anza yesterday was a landspout tornado.

A landspout tornado, or just landspout, is generally smaller and weaker than supercell tornadoes. Landspouts are often mistaken for dust devils and gustnadoes. A landspout does not contain a mesocyclone which is what eventually creates a large tornado.

The landspout’s approximate location was at the cross streets of Mitchell Road and Old Forest Road in Anza.

We received reports of the apparent tornado being seen near HWY 371 at around 3:30 p.m.

The National Weather Service said the apparent tornado was associated with the severe thunderstorm that struck Anza Valley this afternoon.

NWS officials are still working on confirming whether this was indeed a tornado as they are unsure whether it touched down. There are no reports of any damage or injuries in the area.
