DSUSD kicks off new school year

Starting Thursday all students attending public schools in the Coachella Valley will be back in class as it marks the first day of school for the Desert Sands Unified School District. DSUSD has 20 elementary schools, seven middle schools, and four high schools.

It serves over 28 thousand students in the Coachella Valley spanning the areas of Indio, La Quinta, Palm Desert, Indian Wells, Bermuda Dunes, and parts of Rancho Mirage.

A significant addition to the new school year is Richard R. Oliphant Elementary School in north Indio. Staff says it’s built as a modern school with the latest technology as classrooms are equipped with large format display screens for teachers to create lesson plans digitally. Students are also provided Chromebook books at the school to be able to do their assignments from home and campus-wide wireless internet access.

Superintendent Scott Bailey welcomed students along with Indio Mayor Mike Wilson.

“If that doesn’t get you excited nothing will for the brand new school year. Welcoming brand kids into a brand new building. That event will never happen again in a lifetime,” Bailey said.

The two leaders toured classrooms and met with teachers and interacted with students. Bailey said he wanted to see the youngest students succeed during their time in public education.

“I want them to be a successful student. I want students to graduate, walk across our stage, ready for college, career, and life. Those are three key elements for me,” he said.
