Homeowners say sinkhole threatens safety

Homeowners near Desert Hot Springs have a sinking feeling, saying a sinkhole is threatening their safety.

After spending their own money on repairs on another sinkhole the problem is back and this time homeowners want the County of Riverside to cover the repair costs.

“I’m very concerned,” said Stella Bivens, a homeowner in the Dillon Estates community. “It should have been taken care of a long time ago.”

The sinkhole is deep and it’s dangerous, measuring 4 feet across and 6 feet deep.
“Here’s how it was when we dug it up and put a patch on it,” said resident William Dilly while showing us pictures from inside the sinkhole.

“We have a drainline from the runoff from the county streets and the county roads that go through our property as an easement,” Dilly said.

We questioned the County of Riverside and they said this sinkhole isn’t their responsibility.

County officials sent us a statement saying in part, “The County of Riverside Transportation Department has no authority or responsibility to maintain private facilities.”

Dilly, however, has his own documents claiming they tell a much different story.

He says this community will take the county to court if it doesn’t pay for the repairs.
