4 a.m. last call in Palm Springs bars now hinges on Gov brown

The bill that would extend last call to 4 a.m. in seven California cities, including Palm Springs, now hinges on Governor Jerry Brown’s signature.

This week, Senate Bill 905 passed through both the State Senate (28-4) and Assembly floor (51-22). Both State Senator Jeff Stone (R-Yucca Valley) and Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia (D-Coachella) voted yes on the bill.

In July, the Palm Springs city council voted unanimously to be a part of the five-year pilot study, which also includes the cities of Los Angeles, West Hollywood, Long Beach, Sacramento, San Francisco, and Oakland.

Bars, restaurants, and nightclubs in those seven cities would be allowed to serve alcohol until 4 a.m. The extension would not apply to liquor stores.

Some residents expressed mixed feelings about the bill during our report in July, worrying about the potential for increased DUI opportunities. Palm Springs City Councilmember Geoff Kors told KESQ & CBS Local 2 law enforcement told him it could be helpful to have people leave bars at staggering hours instead of 2 a.m.

If signed into law, Senate Bill 905 wouldn’t take effect until January 1, 2021.
