Law enforcement crack down on DUI drivers this Labor Day weekend

Local law enforcement agencies are out looking for impaired drivers on the road this holiday weekend, as well as other traffic violators. It’s all part of a Labor Day weekend enforcement campaign.

Officers have been patrolling since 6:00 p.m Friday and will continue maximum enforcement through Monday night.

Palm Springs and Palm Desert Police are conducting DUI check points and extra DUI patrols. Labor Day weekend 2017, more than 30 people died in California and more than 1,000 people were arrested for impaired driving, according to California Highway Patrol.

Tim Piper of Palm Springs says he uses Lyft and Uber when he goes out for a cocktail.

“Between Uber and Lyft, there’s just no excuse to drink and drive,” Piper said.

“Just for a few extra beers, it’s just not worth it,” said another Palm Springs resident.

But alcohol isn’t the only culprit behind DUIs. Palm Desert Police say there has been an increase in drug impaired crashes. Officers are warning people of the dangers associated with marijuana and even prescription drugs while behind the wheel.

AAA employees are also prepared for the holiday. Crews are anticipating hundreds of thousands to request assistance, primary reasons being dead batteries, lockouts and flat tires.

Law enforcement are reminding people to have a plan before heading out and encourage people to use a ride share service or designate a sober driver.
