Mary Pickford theater flips switch on new 100% energy sustainable power system

The Mary Pickford movie theater in Cathedral City has officially gone green.

On Monday, we reported about the theater completing their installation of a new solar energy system. The theater added hundreds of solar panels to the roof and parking lot and a cutting-edge energy storage plant. Today, city and valley officials unveiled the new system and “flipped the switch” on it.

Concession stand appliances, big industrial grade projectors, and everything else it takes to run the theater is now powered by green energy.

The theater is the first in the country to become 100-percent energy sustainable.

“One of our goals has always been to be more green and to have green energy,” said Cathedral City Mayor Stan Henry.

The new system uses both solar generation and battery storage, enabling the theater to be completely electrically independent around the clock. Ted Hane, general manager of the theater, told KESQ & CBS Local 2 this new system helps save about 85 percent on their energy bill.
