Fallen PSPD officers honored at Washington D.C. memorial
On October 8, 2016, Palm Springs lost two of its finest. Palm Springs Police Officers Jose “Gil” Vega and Lesley Zerebny responded to reports of a disturbance at a residence of Cypress Road along with two other officers. Shortly after that, the officers would come under fire, and Zerebny and Vega would lose their lives.

Today, Vega and Zerebny were honored in Washington D.C., where a group of Palm Desert Charter Middle School students presented wreaths in their memory at the The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial.

“Four students were chosen from an essay contest,” said PSPD Captain Mike Kovaleff. “They were chosen to present wreaths at the memorial to honor Gil and Lesley…[and] we met with [Representative Raul] Ruiz yesterday.”

58 total students joined Captain Kovaleff on the trip.

In February, Rep. Ruiz introduced the “Heroes Lesley Zerebny and Gilbert Vega First Responders Survivors Support Act” on the floor of Congress. The bill aims to provide financial stability to families of public safety officers who have been killed or permanently disabled in the line of duty.
