6th annual Salute to Veterans Ride kicks off

Hundreds of people came out to support local veterans and honor our local fallen heroes at Saturday’s sixth annual “Salute to the Veterans Ride.”

Hundreds of riders and walkers left from the Palm Springs Harley Davidson for a three mile ride to Palm Desert’s Civic Center Park.

The Fallen Heroes project was started by local Cathedral City High School teacher and American Legion historian Lee Wilson Jr. The project honors the service and stories of local veterans, like his two students, Suresh Abayasekara Krause, killed in 2012 in Afghanistan and Ming Sun, killed in Iraq in 2007.

Lee researched the history and background of fallen local veterans dating back to WWII, Vietnam and the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

The American Legion says the annual ride has raised $27,000 over the past three years.
