Some customers remain without electricity after transformer fire

A power outage affected numerous customers in downtown Palm Springs Monday evening, according to police.

On Tuesday morning 63 customers remained without service and Southern California Edison said all service should be restored by 12 noon.

The Palm Springs Police Department announced that “several intersections in the Downtown Palm Springs Area are without power at this time.”

Police added that the intersection of Ramon Road and Avenida Caballeros was also without power.

According to Southern California Edison, at one point over 1,000 customers were affected by this outage.

As of 8:08 p.m., over 200 people were affected. SCE crews determined the cause of the outage was “equipment problems.”

Residents, where the outage originated from, said a transformer caught on fire. Officials told News Channel 3 the fire caused seven units to be displaced.

According to the National Weather Service, today’s rain broke a precipitation record in Palm Springs for this date. As of 9:15 p.m., .67 inches of rain has fallen in the city, breaking the old record of .41 inches set in 1993.
