Palm Springs to hold Plaza Theatre restoration forum

In April, the Palm Springs City Council took a crucial step forward for in the process of potentially restoring the historic Plaza Theatre, moving ahead with plans to have a new owner renovate the venue.

“The place is magical, it’s like going into the Pantages in Los Angeles but on a small scale,” Mayor Robert Moon said to News Channel 3 in April.

In the coming weeks, the city will be opening the doors of that magical piece of Palm Springs history, to host a community forum on its restoration efforts.

The forum will be held on Jan 26 at 10:30 a.m. and will be hosted by Mayor Robert Moon and Councilmember J.R. Roberts, who comprise the City Council Plaza Theatre Restoration Subcommittee. Attendees will be treated to free popcorn and refreshments.

The venue has hosted the likes of Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, and Frank Sinatra, and served as the home for the 1936 world premiere of the Greta Garba classic “Camille”.

“The goal of the forum is to solicit input from the community about the proposed theatre restoration and suggestions about how to finance and fundraise for this important project,” reads the Palm Springs news release on the event. “Everyone is welcome and encouraged to bring innovative ideas about how the City can once again make the historic Plaza Theatre a vibrant part of downtown Palm Springs.”

The Plaza Theatre is located at 128 S Palm Canyon Drive.
