Fog delay not deterring fans, players at Desert Classic

Golf fans had to wait for their favorite players to tee off as foggy conditions delayed the start of the Desert Classic Thursday morning.

It’s a difficult read for these golf pros as a thick fog settled in at PGA West. Players putting in extra work at the driving range with the weather delaying their tee times by an hour. That’s not deterring fans to watch the desert classic.

“Doesn’t matter. It could be pouring rain on us right now, We’re coming out to watch this today,” Kristie Robson, of Oceanside, CA, said.

Another fan whose son is playing in the tournament wonders out loud how the players will cope with the conditions.

“I think it’s pea soup. I mean look out there. You know, how can they even see where they’re balls are going?” Mary Block said.

A fog delay for Michael Block is no issue and understands his mother’s concerns.

“If I had to go out in this, it’s pretty cold and the ball’s not going to fly very far and it’s definitely not going to roll so I’m all about a delay right now. I have no problem with it at all,” he said.

The fog, an unusual sight for people in La Quinta.

“Al, my caddy, he’s saying he’s lived here most of his life and never seen it so it’s pretty wild,” Block said.

His confidence not waning about a later tee time.

“It just means I’m going to be a little warmer and dryer by the time I head out there, so I’m cool with that,” Block said.

Some fans aren’t as confident about their golf game as block in the fog however.

“I know I don’t hit it as far as they do, so I’ll still be able to probably see it. They’re going to hit it so far, they won’t be able to find it in the fog,” Robson said.

Whatever the weather holds, Block’s mother says she knows the crowds will come.

“I think if people have tickets, they’re going to show up. They’ll just show up a little later,” she said.
