Man Pleads ‘Not Guilty’ To Stabbing Girlfriend

INDIO -A La Quinta man accused of repeatedly stabbing his girlfriend during a fight at his home pleaded not guilty today to attempted murder, torture and aggravated mayhem charges.

Nick Caupain, 32, also faces a sentence-enhancing allegation of inflicting great bodily injury on a person during domestic violence.

Riverside County Superior Court Judge William S. Lebov ordered Caupain to be seen by medical staff and mental health services personnel at the Indio jail.

The judge set the defendant’s bail at $1 million and ordered Caupain to return to court on Jan. 6 for a felony settlement conference.

Caupain was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of stabbing his 34-year-old girlfriend multiple times after they got into a fight at his home in the 793000 block of Camino Del Oro, said Lt. Jason Huskey of the La Quinta Police Department.

Neighbors found the woman, whose name was withheld, in the street, covered in blood, around 3:10 p.m. An off-duty nurse who was driving by stopped to render aid, which may have saved the victim’s life, according to Huskey.

The woman was rushed to a hospital with critical injuries, but she was expected to survive, Huskey said.
