Christmas Presents And Turkeys For Duroville Families

THERMAL –Hundreds of needy valley families are getting an early jump on Christmas, thanks to the generosity of others. Smiling faces were all around at the Thermal trailer park known as “Duroville.” Families lined up early Wednesday morning for free toys and turkeys. Some had been waiting since dawn.

The giveaway was sponsored by Martha’s Village & Kitchen in Indio and Sacred Heart Church in Palm Desert.

A truckload of around 2,000 toys were brought in. No child went away empty-handed.

“I’m happy because I can play with new things I’ve never played with before,” said one little girl.

Each family was also given a turkey, to help with preparations for Christmas dinner.Money is scarce in Duroville. It’s home to migrant workers who are living below the poverty level. The park itself has been a source of controversy with numerous health and safety code violations.Parents said they were grateful others were thinking about them.

“People don’t have money to buy gifts for the kids,” said Juliana Rodriguez. “This is great for the people.”
