Grenade Scare Prompts Evacuations

PALM DESERT -We’re learning about a man arrested during a police search that saw some residents of a Palm Desert neighborhood told to stay in their homes.

Police served a warrant on the 72-800 block ofPitahaya Street near Highway 74 yesterday afternoon.

We now know 18-year-old Erick Moreno was living there. Police say he beat two men with a baseball bat during a fight December 22nd.

Officers searching Moreno’s house found what they thought was an old German grenade, dating back to World War Two.

Police evacuated nearby homes, and shut down nearby streets while a bomb squad investigated.

The grenade turned out to only be a replica. No one was hurt. Officers cleared the area several hours later.

Moreno is now behind bars on $25,000 dollars bail.
