USA Wins First Gold Medal. Ono In Olympic History Record Books

WHISTLER, British Columbia – Hannah Kearney has won America’s first gold medal at the Vancouver Olympics. Kearney won the women’s moguls by defeating Canadian Jenn Heil. American Shannon Bahrke took bronze to add to her silver medal from 2002.

Kearney’s win came after a 22nd-place finish at the Turin Olympics where she came in as a favorite. It denied Heil, the defending Olympic champion, the chance to become the first Canadian to win Olympic gold on home turf.

– Apolo Anton Ohno has won the silver medal in the short-track 1,500-meter speedskating final. He ties Bonnie Blair as the most decorated U.S. Winter Olympian with his sixth career medal at three Olympics.

Lee Jung-su of South Korea won the gold. Ohno finished second after Korean teammates Sung Si-bak and Lee Ho-suk took each other out on the final turn. American J.R. Celski earned the bronze.

Ohno’s six medals are the most of any short-track skater.

– The first gold medal of the 2010 Winter Games went to Swiss ski jumper Simon Ammann (see-MOHN’ uh-MAHN’), who won two golds in Salt Lake City eight years ago.

– The first Olympic record was set by Dutch speedskater Sven Kramer in winning the 5,000 meters. Kramer’s winning time of 6 minutes, 14.60 seconds shaved six-hundredths of a second off the world mark.

– Slovakia’s Anastazia Kuzmina won her first Olympic gold medal, taking the women’s 7.5-kilometer biathlon sprint at Whistler Olympic Park.

– The men’s downhill race at the Vancouver Olympics has been rescheduled for Monday morning after it was washed out because of slushy conditions.
