Riverside County Soldier Dies In Action

CORONA – The Department of Defense says a soldier from Corona has died, while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

Staff Sgt. Michael David P. Cardenaz, 29, died February 20 in Kunar, Afghanistan.

Enemy forces attacked his unit with rocket-propelled grenades.

He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colo.

His death follows the announcement Monday of a Twentynine Palms marine who also died in Afghanistan.

Lance Cpl. Joshua H. Birchfield died February 19 in the Helmend Province.

He was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Twentynine Palms, Calif.
