Injured Hiker Rescued in Palm Springs

A Long Beach woman who suffered an ankle injury while hiking with a companion was airlifted to safety today from a mountain slope above Palm Springs.

Nelly Guerrero, 49, called for help around 10:25 a.m. when she hurt herself while climbing about 150 feet up the side of the mountain near Baristo Road, said Officer Melissa Desmarais of the Palm Springs Police Department.

The police department’s mounted search-and-rescue unit traversed rough terrain to reach Guerrero, Desmarais said.

A Riverside County sheriff’s helicopter airlifted the hiker and a female companion to safety around 12:20 p.m., according to Desmarais.

Guerrero was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center for treatment of her ankle injury, the officer said.
