Early Morning Standoff Ends, Suspect In Custody
Police are searching for the second man in connection with a Cathedral City home burglary. It took place at about 3 a.m. Sunday morning on the 69-600 block of Stonewood Court.
After a three-hour standoff, 30-year-old Luis Medina was put in the back of a police car. Police said he had just one thing to say.
“He said he was tired,” said Chuck Robinson with the Cathedral City Police Department.
Police said Medina and another man entered the home while the residents were out of town. They think this was the suspects’ second strike in just one month and this time they had a key.
“It looks like he was coming back to commit another burglary at the same residence,” said Robinson.
When police arrived, one of the men ran off and Medina barricaded himself in the attic.
“The burglar was not cooperative,” said Robinson.
Police surrounded the home with their guns drawn and they deployed gas into the attic.
“We also had to remove drywall and the ceiling material until we located him,” said Robinson.
During the three-hour stand off police asked residents to stay locked inside their homes or to leave the area, but those residents still kept a close eye on the action.
“It was full of action and entertainment,” said Tim Rennick.
From a safe distance, neighbors gathered to watch, what they called, an unusual scene.
“It’s a shock for the whole neighborhood,” said Cindi Boggs.
“I can’t stand the idea of this happening in my neighborhood, it’s unnerving especially for the kids,” said Rennick.
Police said the second suspect is a Hispanic man with a shaved head. They’re still investigating if the two suspects are connected with last month’s burglary at the same home. Anyone with information is asked to call police.
