Valley Residents Honor Gay Rights Activist
On Saturday people across in the Golden State remembered Harvey Milk — an activist and politician who was dedicated to gay rights.
“It’s about time we get something for our community,” said Patrick Brown.
Milk was the first openly gay man elected to public office in California, but his career was cut short when he was assassinated in 1978. More than 30 years later, he’s honored with his own day — March 22nd
“He’s a hero to our community,” said George Zander of Palm Springs Equality California.
Solomon Rose said, although Milk is famous for his gay rights movements, he stood for much more.
“Harvey Milk was everyone’s person, not just gay rights but for everyone’s rights,” said Rose.
At the local Equality California office, people commemorated the day by calling voters and asking for support for gay marriage.
“We ask people their opinion of gay marriage. If they’re on our side that’s great, if not, we try to persuade them to vote in our direction,” said Zander.
On Harvey Milk Day volunteer turnout was lower than expected. Those who did show up said they’ll fight to the end, just like Milk.
“Harvey Milk started with just one or two people and he created victory and a whole movement,” said Zander.
