Cooling Centers To Open In Desert Communities

Coachella Valley temperatures up to 110 degrees are possible over the next few days, making for the hottest weekend so far this year, a meteorologist said today.

“This weekend, we’ll get up around normal summertime highs — 110 and maybe a little higher,” National Weather Service meteorologist Gregg Martin said. “It will be warm and dry.”

In Death Valley, the hottest, driest and lowest spot in North America, the high at Furnace Creek is expected to hit 112 degrees today.

More than a dozen cooling centers will offer an escape from the heat to residents across the Coachella Valley. Although the official kickoff date is June 15, many are already open. But furlough Fridays and weekend closures because of budgetary woes mean they won’t be open for this weekend’s heat. Only Eisenhower Medical Center is open seven days a week.
