New Rules Set For Desert Campers

There are new camping-related rules in Southern California’s federal desert lands that ban public nudity, litter, glass containers and using pallets for firewood.

The federal Bureau of Land Management has adopted eight “interim final supplement rules” that will make laws governing the desert more consistent.

The rules also ban setting up camp in part of Dumont Dunes, saving camp spaces for others and transporting people on parts of vehicles not designed for passengers.

BLM spokesman Steve Raxo says the rules took effect on June 25 but a public comment period continues through July 26. If there are no changes to the rules, violators will be subject to citations or arrest, a year in jail and $1,000 fines for convictions.
