A Metro Blue Line commuter train has collided with a police cruiser in Long Beach, sending an officer and 11 passengers to the hospital.

The crash happened at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Long Beach Boulevard and the Pacific Coast Highway.

Fire Battalion Chief Frank Hayes says the police cruiser was pushed down the train tracks. An officer was pinned inside his vehicle for about half an hour while rescuers used special equipment to cut him out.

The officer has been transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
