Air Attack Underway On Cabazon, Joshua Tree Wildfires

Fire crews were battling wildfires in Cabazon, Joshua Tree, Big Bear and several other areas on Thursday afternoon after lightning-fueled storms sparked fires in dry brush, according to Cal Fire.

An air attack was launched around on a fire that broke out on the Morongo Indian Reservation north of Banning.

The blaze on a ridge in Potrero Canyon near the San Gorgonio Wilderness Area was reported at 1:52 p.m., said Cheri Patterson of the Riverside County Fire Department.

Firefighters were trying to make their way into the remote area, she said.

A vegetation fire broke out at 1:36 p.m. at Sunset Avenue and Wilson Street in Banning, according to Patterson.

Fire crews were also fighting what are believed to be a lightning-sparked fire in Joshua Tree National Park. Park spokesman Joe Zarki confirmed fire crews were battling a fire that covered seven acres.

The fire was burning in the Inspiration Point area, he said, and crews were waiting for air support to help in the fight.

In Big Bear, the U.S. Forest Service were also battling fires believed to have been started by lightning.
