Ultralight Aircraft Crashes Near Perris
A 72-year-old Riverside man was injured today when the ultralight plane he was piloting crashed near Perris.
The plane crashed about 8:30 a.m. in a field near the Ramona Expressway and Reservoir Avenue in Lakeview, several miles north of the Perris Valley Airport, said Cheri Patterson of the Riverside County Fire Department.
Witnesses said the pilot was trying to make a landing when the aircraft lost power and went down, said Sgt. Michael McConville of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.
The pilot was taken to Riverside County Regional Medical Center for treatment of an injured left leg, McConville said.
No one on the ground was hurt.
The aircraft was not registered, according to Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Allen Kenitzer.
The FAA will not be involved in the accident investigation because ultralights — which generally weigh less than 250 pounds and carry only five gallons of gas — don’t fall under the agency’s purview.
