Meeting The Volunteers Of The Bob Hope Classic: Allan Hurst

Sixteen years ago, Allan Hurst was approached by the Bob Hope Classic to volunteer. Five years later, he was asked to announce the golfers on the first tee box. Since then, he’s been a staple at the Classic.

“I don’t use any amplification or anything, when I’m on the first tee,” said Hurst. “It’s just a natural skill, it’s a gift. We never want the rabbit on the swim team cause they don’t swim well. so, if you got a good voice, then you use it.”

Hurst received his B.A. from the University of Kansas where he played basketball with the great Wilt Chamberlain.

While Hurst enjoys the fun atmosphere and the festivities of the week, he also takes his job seriously. “It’s a personal responsibility that I feel for the people of the Coachella Valley, and the guests who come, and the pros, and the amateurs, and the celebrities that all come and have such a good time,” said Hurst. “So it’s just a great honor for me and I’m humbled by it.”

You can find Hurst at the 52nd Bob Hope Classic starting January 17. He will join thousands of other volunteers.
