More Earthquakes Rattle Southern California

Three moderate aftershocks rattled the Imperial Valley and eastern San Diego County today, according to automated seismographs and computers operated by the U.S. Geological Survey.

The largest aftershock, magnitude 3.3, was centered about 37 miles south- southeast of Mexicali, or about 120 miles southeast of San Diego. It hit at 7:26 a.m.

It was preceded one minute earlier by a magnitude 2.7 quake in the same general area. And at 8:03 a.m., a magnitude 2.0 aftershock hit.

A magnitude 4.9 aftershock struck the valley at 4:52 a.m. Saturday, and was felt in eastern San Diego County.

Thousands of similarly-sized aftershocks have rattled the area since a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck April 2, killing two people in Mexicali and severely damaging canals, schools and older buildings in Imperial County.
