Steve Sanchez Talks About Stabbing
A week after being stabbed — former state assembly candidate Steve Sanchez is talking about his road to recovery.
Steve Sanchez walks with his family through the farmers market in Old Town La Quinta.
An amazing feat considering just a few days ago he was in a medically induced coma.
“I just remember just randomly opening my eyes and I saw my family there and I think I was more in shock seeing my family there. And I think I was more in shock seeing my family because they’re in New Jersey,” said Sanchez, 34.
Sanchez and a marine friend were at a birthday party in Whittier last Sunday when a pair of party crashers showed up.
Jonathan Moran, 27, of Highland and Raymond Martinez, 29, of Rancho Cucamonga allegedly started a fight.
Sanchez stepped in to help and got stabbed in the process.
Police arrested the Moran and Martinez Friday.
“Somebody walks around with a switchblade or a shank, you want that person off the street anyway and if it took me to take a few stabbings to get them off the street, so be it,” said Sanchez.
Thoughts, prayers and well-wishes continue to pour in from the community.
Hundreds posted to Sanchez’s Facebook wall.
Friends created a group to keep the community informed of his progress.
Some Republican leaders showed their support at a party in Sanchez honor.
“I got to tell you the people in this community have been outstanding not just with the thoughts and prayers that were given to my brother but just them trying to reach us personally,” said Cynthia Sanchez, Steve’s sister.
“Even my democrat friends left me messages on my Facebook page. That’s what I’m more grateful for is just that everybody came around, rallied together in their support,” said Sanchez.
The Former State Assembly Candidate and marine says the experience opened his eyes.
He said he hopes to get back to serving the community as soon as he is able to.
But it’s process that will happen step-by-step with his family at his side.
