Derek Lamely Leads Bob Hope Classic On Day-One

Derek Lamely shot a 9-under 63 in the first round of the Bob Hope Classic on Wednesday, playing the final 10 holes in 8 under to take a one-stroke lead over J.J. Henry and Jhonattan Vegas.

Lamely had an eagle and six birdies in that 10-hole stretch on the Palmer Private course. He was a Rookie of the Year contender last season after earning his first victory, and his biggest goal this winter is to win in time to qualify for the Masters.

However, the leaders realize their first-round scores mean little in the PGA Tour’s only five-day event over four fairly generous courses. Henry holed a 132-yard wedge shot on his first hole at the Nicklaus Private course, but didn’t get rolling until making six birdies in eight holes around the turn.
