Janitor Claims He Shot Principal Because He Was Fired

A school janitor told police that he was fired by the principal the morning of a deadly shooting at a Northern California elementary school.

Placerville police said Thursday that 44-year-old John Luebbers told investigators that he went home to get a handgun after being fired from Louisiana Schnell Elementary School.

Police say Luebbers told investigators he returned to the school office and fired two rounds at 50-year-old Sam LaCara.

LaCara was taken to a hospital, where he died Wednesday.

The shooting prompted a lockdown of the school, located about 50 miles east of Sacramento. No children were injured in the shooting.

Authorities arrested Luebbers at his home following an hour-long manhunt.

Residents held a candlelight vigil for LaCara on Wednesday night outside a church.
