Rare May Rain Recorded In Palm Springs

A trace of rare May rain fell today in the Coachella Valley, where temperatures were about 20 degrees below normal.

Less than a hundredth of an inch made it into National Weather Service rain gauges between 5 a.m. and about 8 a.m., as a late-season system swept down the coast, then east across the desert.

Tuesday’s high in Palm Springs was 79 degrees, 16 degrees less than the average high for date, according to the NWS.

Highs today are expected to top out around 70 degrees amid breezy conditions, and temperature are forecast to remain on the cool side through Sunday.

The overnight low in Palm Springs is forecast to be 55 degrees, a far sight from the record low of 43 for the date, set in 1962, according to the NWS.

Some snow fell around Southern California at elevations of about 6,000 feet or more.
