Gov’t: Cell Phones May Cause Cancer
Five billion people or nearly three-quarters of the global population use cell-phones, and now there’s new word they could cause cancer.
The World Health Organization is doing an about-face after assuring the public that the phones didn’t present a health risk.
The change of heart comes after a group of 31 scientists from 14 countries including the United States determined cell-phone use can possibly pose the same cancer risks as lead, engine exhaust and chloroform.
They came to the conclusion after reviewing several published studies. Some U.S. doctors say more research is needed.
“The one study may show some connection that was asking people who already have brain cancer if they remember how often they used their cell phone. The bottom line is the jury’s still out on this,” said Dr. Marc Siegel.
The cell phone industry maintains there’s no conclusive proof of any danger. Just in case, experts suggest keeping the phone away from your head by using a headset or speaker option.
