Police Searching For Roadside Vandal In Hi-Desert

Police in the Hi-Desert say someone’s been playing a dangerous game with drivers — pelting vehicles with rocks — as they speed by.

Police say it started late last Friday night when a woman going west on Highway 62 reported hearing a loud “bang” against against her car near Indio Avenue.

Fearing for her safety, the woman sped home and found two dents in her vehicle.

Police got several similar calls that night.

Then late Sunday, more reports of someone throwing objects from the side of the road.

“Like a loud “thunk.” Real loud. You could tell it wasn’t from my truck. Something hit it,” said Bernie, a Yucca Valley resident who said someone hit his truck.

He says his friend — driving with a small child in the backseat — was also hit.

“They thought somebody shot at the car. The window busted. He didn’t know what to do. He just punched it.”

Police say — during two nights of vandalism — several people were hurt, but nothing serious.

The suspect is being described as a male wearing dark clothing — possibly a hooded sweatshirt.

But police have little to go on — because it was dark — and there are no lights in the area.

Anyone with information is urged to call Yucca Valley Police at 760-366-4175. A reward is being offered.
