Cooler Than Normal Temps A Welcome Change In Desert
Texas resident Tom Rickey is taking in as much golf play as he can in Palm Desert on this cool Thursday.
“We usually come out here in June. Usually, it’s a little hotter,” he said. “But, we think it’s great.”
He and his wife return home to San Antonio on Friday, where it’s predicted to reach 100 degrees with 37% humidity.
“You never feel dry,” said Esther Rickey. “It’s difficult to breath sometimes because the air gets very heavy, and everything you touch feels wet and damp.”
Golf instructor Patty Curtiss can relate to the discomfort. She said playing in humid weather can cramp one’s style.
But, she said the strong winds also have been exceptionally extreme in the desert lately.
“We try to hit the ball harder when it’s windy, and that’s difficult,” she said. “It’s not something good for your body or golf game.”
Heat warnings have been issued across the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic and Upper Midwest. Forecasters say the heat wave isn’t expected to go away anytime soon.
These days, leaving the desert seems like such a mistake.
Tom Rickey isn’t ready to deal with the Texas humidity.
“I’ll just stay inside,” he said.
