Governor Brown Helps Break Ground On Blythe Solar Project

Governor Jerry Brown was in Blythe Friday to help break ground on a major solar project.

The 1,000-megawatt project will include four individual plants — with trough-shaped mirrors to harness the sun’s energy.

When finished, it will generate enough electricity to power more than 300,000 homes.

“California has been a mecca for pioneers, people who break new ground,” said Governor Brown.

The governor said he was happy to be in the desert — fresh off his budget veto.

“I came out here from the capitol when lots of fur is flying. Yes, I did veto the budget. Yes, we are going to be a leader in solar energy and all the jobs that can create,” said Governor Brown.

Oakland-based Solar Trust of America is heading the $6 billion project.

It will cover 7,000 acres of public land.

The first phase of construction is expected to be completed in 2013.
