Double Semi Accident Shuts Down Interstate 10, Sends One To Hospital
Two semi trucks crashed on Interstate 10 on Friday afternoon, igniting in flames.
The accident happened on the westbound side of the freeway, just before 2 p.m., near Red Cloud Mine Road and Eagle Mountain Road in Desert Center, according to the California Highway Patrol. That’s about 50 miles east of Indio.
As a result, all westbound lanes of the interstate are closed to traffic.
CHP officers were in the process of moving some of the center median dividers to allow traffic to turn around,
One of the trucks involved in the collision was hauling hay. It is not known what the other big rig was carrying.
A medical helicopter was brought in to transport one injured person. Eastbound traffic was halted for a short time so it could land.
At 5 p.m., Cal Fire crews on the scene battling the flames estimated the westbound lanes of I-10 could be shut down for up to 5 hours.
At 3:45 p.m., one KESQ viewer called to tell us the back-up had stretched to 10 miles to the east.
