Cycle-Fest Takes Over Empire Polo Club

(CNS) – The inaugural Coachella Valley Cycle-Fest continues today at the Empire Polo Club, featuring bike races, live music and art.

Cycle-Fest, which opened Friday, is sponsored by the Desert Recreation District’s Desert Recreation Foundation and Coachella Valley Volunteers in Medicine. “We’re expecting close to 3,000 people,” said Felicia Horton of Desert Recreation District. “Between the vendor fairs, artwork, and athletic events, we’ve ensured that there will be something for everyone to enjoy.”

Saturday, there will be the Century, a 100-mile race; a Metric Century, a 62-mile race; and 20-mile rides.

The event will also feature a bike swap, vendor fair, barbecue and “Oktoberfest” bar.

Performers include country singer Matt Kennon and rockabilly singer Chan Romero. Artist Eric Banas, a Joshua Tree resident, will create the start/finish line archway out of discarded bike parts.

Cycle-Fest benefits Trips for Kids, which takes at-risk youths on mountain bike rides; Earn-A-Bike programs; Coachella Valley Volunteers in Medicine, which provides health care to local low-income and uninsured people; and the Desert Recreation Foundation, which raises funds to enhance the recreation district’s park and recreation system.
