William F. Cody Lands Spot On Palm Springs Walk Of Stars
Modernist architect William F. Cody will receive a star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars in a ceremony Friday coinciding with Modernism Week.
An architect is selected annually for inclusion in the Walk of Fame during Modernism Week, which begins Thursday and runs through Feb. 26 this year, spokeswoman Lydia Kremer said.
After the dedication of Cody’s star on Friday, the public can visit the new Edwards Harris Center for Architecture & Design at the Palm Springs Art Museum.
Cody moved to Palm Springs in 1946 and was the first employed staff architect for the Desert Inn Hotel before setting off on his own to design the Del Marcos Hotel. His conversion of the 1936 Thunderbird Ranch to Thunderbird Country Club led to design commissions for the clubhouses at Tamarisk, Eldorado, Seven Lakes and other country club developments.
Cody was one of the architects of the Spa Bath House with Don Wexler and Rick Harrison, and the adjacent Spa Hotel. He also designed L’Horizon Hotel, St. Theresa Catholic Church and the Palm Springs Library Center.
“Cody left behind a legacy of important contributions to what is known today as Desert Modernism,” Kremer said.
Palm Springs Modernism Week is an annual 10-day festival of mid-century modern design, architecture and culture, and features more than 80 events, including home tours, films, lectures, fashion events and receptions at locations rarely opened to the public.
