Thousand Palms Debris Fire Creates Smokey Skies

A debris fire that ignited Monday morning in Thousand Palms sent a lot of smoke into the air, sparking concerns from some residents of Thousands Palms.

The fire was reported at around 4:30 a.m. near the intersection of Rio Del Sol and Vista Chino, just north of Interstate 10, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

Firefighters arrived to find two large debris piles, 200-feet long, 50-feet wide and 20-feet high, on fire.

They were able to put the fires out, but crews will stay on the scene for several more hours to make sure no hot spots flare up.

No evacuations were necessary, according to the fire department, because the fires were in a remote location.
