Alzheimer’s Lecture Set For Palm Desert On Saturday

Many of us have already been affected by the condition known as Alzheimer’s disease. Whether as a caregiver, a child, a grandchild, a neighbor, or a friend, the disease makes loved ones a shell of their former selves, and it makes the survivors’ lives sad and incredibly difficult. As life spans continue to rise, the number of people with Alzheimer’s grows, and with it, the number of people who have to deal with the painful fallout.

To educate people on Alzheimer’s, dementia and end of life situations, and to help people all deal with this growing problem, expert Dr. Peter Rabins will be delivering a lecture on Saturday from 1-2:30pm at Sacred Heart Church, 43-775 Deep Canyon Road in Palm Desert.

The lecture is free and is being underwritten by the Companion Visitation Ministry of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Rabins is considered a national leader in the care of Alzheimer’s patients. During his lecture, Rabins will: -introduce Alzheimer’s through one family’s experience, providing a framework to better visualize the reality faced by caregivers; -teach the audience how to develop a basic care plan to minimize frustration for both the patient and the caregiver; -help develop an understanding of behaviors that may be fear-based, possible triggers and positive solutions.

Rabins received his medical degree from Tulane University in New Orleans and completed his residency at the University of Oregon in Portland. He completed fellowships in consultation/liaison psychiatry and neuropsychiatry at Johns Hopkins. Now a professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Johns Hopkins, he is the Richman Family Professor in Alzheimer’s disease. Rabins focuses on the neuropsychiatric features of Alzheimer’s disease and end-of-life care. He is the co-author of “The 36 Hour-Day,” first published in 1981. It is in its 4th edition with over 2 million copies sold.
