I-10 pavement work in Palm Springs delayed

Pavement work that had been planned this week for parts of Interstate 10 between Banning and Palm Springs was canceled today, a Caltrans spokeswoman said.

The work would have forced crews to close alternating lanes of I-10 in both directions between Pennsylvania Avenue and Highway 111 nightly until Saturday, Caltrans spokeswoman Michelle Profant said. A future date was not immediately set.

In February, a paving “miscue” by Caltrans resulted in a huge Sunday traffic jam on westbound I-10 between Palm Springs and Banning.

The agency apologized and vowed it would not happen again.

The project that was supposed to begin on Tuesday was to be handled by the same contractor that was working in February, according to Cal Trans.
