Smoke forces plane to return to Palm Springs airport

An American Airlines flight bound for Dallas/Fort Worth had to return to Palm Springs International Airport shortly after take-off on Monday when the pilot reported the smell of smoke in the cockpit.

A Federal Aviation Administration spokesman told KESQ that Flight 1848 took off from Palm Springs around 11 a.m. Shortly afterward, the pilot reported the smell of smoke to air traffic controllers, who advised him to return to the airport.

Fire trucks were dispatched to the runway, where the plane landed at 11:48 a.m. with no damage or injuries.

Palm Springs fire crews are investigating to determine the source of the odor.

There was no word on when the passengers on board the flight would be able to resume their trip.
