I-10 accident kills Ohio sheriff’s detective, injures family

An Ohio sheriff’s deputy, who authorities say wasn’t wearing his seat belt, was killed near Indio on Friday morning in a single-car rollover accident.

Delaware County sheriff’s detective Dan Otto, 38, of Columbus, was killed in an car accident while passing through the Palm Springs, Calif., area with his family, according to a Delaware County spokesperson.

The California Highway Patrol reports the accident happened shortly after 8 a.m. when the driver of their 2006 Honda Accord had some sort of medical condition, which caused him to pass out behind the wheel.

The car swerved back and forth across the eastbound lanes of the freeway, until it hit a guardrail causing it to flip several times.

Otto, who CHP officers said wasn’t wearing his seat belt, was thrown from the car and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver, Daniel Case, 83, and passenger Phyllis Case, 82, of Mesa, Ariz., and a 9-year-old child were transported to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs. Their condition is not known.
