Neighbors ride up the tram to cooler temperatures

Dozens of families lined up Saturday to take a trip to the top of the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. For many of them they say one thing — and one thing only — drove them up there.

“Getting cooled off because it’s too hot,” said Al Gulbranson of La Quinta.

They took advantage of the 70s — 40 degrees less than on the valley floor.

“We have a slogan, ride up to cool off,” said Lena Zimmerschied, the tramway spokeswoman.

“Just getting out of the heat, getting some exercise, and enjoying the outdoors,” said Bill Miller of Cathedral City.

What Scott Fishman and his daughter McKayla said is hard to do in the desert.

“Oh it’s impossible to do it down there. Even if you’re in the water you can’t escape the heat,” he said.

However, when the triple digit temperatures hit — business heats up for the tram.

This summer, campsites are filled and the tram sees nearly 2,000 riders a day over the weekends. Even though it’s much cooler in the mountains — tram officials warn you still need to be prepared.

“We want, especially if you’re hiking to bring water, wear appropriate clothing and of course check in with rangers,” said Zimmerschied.

As for the ride down, McKayla hopes she can find some relief from the heat.

“When we get back to the hotel, we’re probably going to the pool,” she said.
