Palm Springs streets face repavement, closure

The Palm Springs Public Works Department will begin the city’s annual Street Overlay Program Monday.

The program provides an asphalt overlay on city streets every eight to 10 years. Cross streets at major roads will be closed, or partially closed, so crews can install new concrete gutters before asphalt is laid on the major road, according to the city’s website.

Today and tomorrow, South Palm Canyon Drive will be closed at Mesquite, Palo Verde Ocotillo avenues.

Thursday through next Monday, Ramon Road will be closed at Calle Palo Fierro, Camino Real, Warm Sands Drive and Calle Amigos.

On July 25, Farrell Drive will be closed at Juanita Drive.

The overlay program this year includes:

– North Indian Canyon Drive from Alejo Road to Vista Chino;

– South Palm Canyon from Mesquite Avenue to East Palm Canyon and El
Camino Way;

– Ramon Road from Indian Canyon to Sunrise Way;

– Farrell Drive to Tahquitz Canyon Way to a few hundred feet north of
Tamarisk Drive; and

– Splashpad at South Palm Canyon and Avenida Granada

There may also be temporary road closures later for striping of streets and intersections. Construction is expected to take a total of three to four weeks, according to the city.

The contractor is San Bernardino-based Matich Corp.
