Modern-day air conditioner celebrates 110th birthday
On July 17, 1902,the first modern air conditioner was introduced.
The first air-conditioningunit was developed by Dr.Willis H. Carrier. He came up with the invention for a printing company in Brooklyn, NY.The high humidity at the printing plant was causing ink colors to bleed.
People in the air-conditioning business today realize if it wasn’t for Carrier, they might be in some other line of work.
“You know what, he got us started in the game and started moving the industry when he did,” said Patrick Somer, general manager of General Air Conditioning & Heating in Thousand Palms. “We have a lot to be thankful for because we depend on it a lot.”
Somer added that this time of year, with so many desert residents relying on their AC,his company has dayside and nightside crews availableto make repairs or installations.
