Summer Virus: What’s Going Around for the Week of August 7

Swimmer’s ear is one of the biggest complaints this time of year. That’s just one thing local doctors are talking about when looking at “What’s Going Around” the area where you live.

Before children head back to school, Dr. Randolph Gibbs wants to remind parents about the pertussis vaccine update. In 2010, more than 9,000 whooping cough cases were reported in California, and 10 babies died. That was the most in 60 years. He says given the recent outbreaks, it is important children be protected against these illnesses. Seventh graders aged 11 or 12 should get the shot ahead of classes. At the Mecca Clinic, doctors are also on the lookout for West Nile virus.
Several patients came in to see Dr. Frank Arian this week with a classic viral syndrome. Arian says he’s seen this in Palm Springs over the last three weeks or so. All complained of a sore throat, congestion, cough, diarrhea and vomiting. This summer bug is hanging on, and patients are still hoping for improvement at the 12 day mark. Windy and dusty conditions are also ramping up sinusitis cases. And a large number of patients are reporting severe anxiety. This can be treated with medication, but that should be a last resort. Always check in with your doctor to discuss treatment options.
Fever, sore throat, fatigue, vomiting and diarrhea is also going around La Quinta. Dr. Erica Ruiz says rest and symptom control are about all you can do. This lasts about 10 days. Ear infections are mainly hitting kids and younger people. Antibiotics are needed for treatment. Also, allergies are coming back around again. “Over-the-counter treatment is usually effective,” Ruiz explains.
A virus is behind a fever, with generalized bone pain and malaise being treated by Mitch Claire, a physician’s assistant, in Indio. A gastrointestinal stomach bug is also going around. Claire suggests seeing your doctor if the vomiting, diarrhea, or fever persists. Also, otitis externa is a big problem because of so many people in the swimming pool. Antibiotic and pain relieving drops will help.
