One person killed in Interstate 10 collision

One man was killed in a collision on eastbound Interstate 10 Thursday morning.

Seven other people were injured in the crash that happened at 7:20 a.m., east of Date Palm Drive.

A bad tire was to blame for the collision, according to the California Highway Patrol. 23-year-old Rudolfo Flores of Pico Rivera was driving his Mitsubishi Montero, when his left rear tire failed and he lost control.

The Mitsubishi rolled over, trapping both Flores and the right front passenger inside the vehicle, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Joe Zagorski.

One passenger was thrown from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency personnel, Zagorski said.

Passengers suffered minor to severe injuries and were taken to either Desert Regional Medical Center or Eisenhower Medical Center.

“It is very important for every driver to thoroughly check the condition and pressure of their tires frequently and especially before any long trips,” Zagorski said.

“If a rapid tire failure is experienced while driving on the freeway, don’t brake, keep both hands on the steering wheel, take your foot off of the accelerator and slowly guide your vehicle to the right shoulder. Make sure that you stop your vehicle completely on the right shoulder and out of the traffic lane.”

The CHP had shut down eastbound Interstate 10 between Date Palm Drive and Bob Hope Drive, but roads were reopened about 5 hours later.
