Power restored in Desert Hot Springs, Cathedral City

Power is now restored to all 12,000 Southern California Residents in Desert Hot Springs, Cathedral City, and Sky Valley after they lost power Thursday.

According to Southern California Edison’s website, the Desert Hot Springs outage began at 10:48 a.m. Thursday. At one point, about 11,000 customers had no electricity in the area of Dillon Road and Palm Drive.

Crews worked quickly to switch customers to other available circuits, an Edison spokesperson said.

Earlier in the day, motorists driving through Desert Hot Springs were also caught in the outage. Police officers asked drivers to use caution after traffic signals on Palm Drive stopped working around 11 a.m.

Lights along Palm Drive were fixed and are currently functioning. However, Desert Hot Springs police are continuing to advise drivers that the power remains intermittent throughout the city.

In Cathedral City, one Newschannel 3 viewer posted a picture on Facebook, showing flames and smoke coming from an underground cover.

Michael Crothers, of Cathedral City, took the photo along the 35300 block of Date Palm Drive.

According to Crothers, two explosions went off underground, in front of the Taqueria San Miguel.

The power outage started around 11:15 a.m. on Date Palm Drive, north of Gerald Ford Drive, according to Edison’s company webpage.
